Hugo Martins

Born in Marinha Grande, in 1973.

After concluding the third year of the Law Degree in Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Autónoma, in Lisbon, he when to the United States to study in cinema.

In New York, he studied Basic and Advanced Filmmaking in the New York Film Academy, and, in 1999, he returned to Portugal, where he entered the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, in Lisbon. In 2003 he finishes his bachelor in the montage department and, in 2005, finishes his degree in Directing.

He started to work in cinema still in the United States, as a production assistant in the film of Eric Mendelsohn, Judy Berline. Ever since, he as worked in Portugal, with numerous directors, amongst them Joaquim Sapinho and Manuel Mozos, especially as an assistant director.

In 2006 he graduated in Script for Feature Film managed by the North American scriptwriter Margaret Glover, in the Creation and Creativity Program promoted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

In 2011 he directed his first feature film WHAT’S NEW ABOUT LOVE? with another five directors. It premiered internationality in the official competition of the Raindance Festival in London, it was part of the official competition in the São Paulo Film Festival and the IndieLisboa Festival, where it received the award for Best Portuguese Feature Film Fiction. Zon Lusomundo distributed it in 7 cities in Portugal.
